Seriously, Not Allowed to Read Your Bible? The Miting by Dee Yoder, 2014

Have you ever met an Amish person?  What do you know about their "plain" life?

If you'd like to have a peek into real Amish life you might want to check out The Miting by Dee Yoder. Her fiction is based on the lives of her former-Amish friends.

This particular Kregel blog tour book is about Leah, a seventeen-year-old girls who is part of a family of an Old Order Amish home and church.  Leah is filled with questions about God and her relationship with him. She doesn't understand why her life is full of rules that aren't in the Bible.  When her friend is abused at home Leah wonders why the Godly men around allow it to happen.  Uh oh, that equals rebellion in this story!  As the story progresses Leah begins to read a Bible to learn more.  In the Old Order that is strictly forbidden.  If she refuses to stop reading her Bible she risks miting--shunning which would cut her off from her family.  Leah has to examine her beliefs, the grace of God, the gift of Christ, and exactly what it means to sacrifice.  Why is it such a threat to find out more about her God and Savior?

This was a great story.  It seemed very real.  I like that it was based on the lives of real people.  It is well-written and describes a very different way of life.  I'm not sure I could live under such strict rules that do not allow independent reading of the Bible, encouraging blindly following a harshly strict leader/Bishop instead.  It was hard to find out about how a family member might be treated for something that seems harmless to many.
I'll be seeking out more books from this talented author.  I'm also going to be checking out the Mission to Amish People ministry where Dee is a mentor and volunteer.  If this book touches you hopefully you'll do the same.

I hope you get the chance to check out Mission to Amish People--we love our former Amish friends, and are glad to have others learn more about them also. Blessings to you! :)
